The Papers
Act One — The Arrival
Scene: The Living Room, Late Morning
Bethany finds the documents
Bethany
What… is this?
The attorney doesn’t answer right away. Bethany’s eyes drop back to the papers spread across her lap. Her fingers tremble as she turns another page.
Bethany
Why are these divorce papers?
A heavy stillness settles over the room. Across from her, the attorney sits with practiced calm.
Larry’s Attorney
They were drawn up for Larry.
Bethany stares, uncomprehending.
Bethany
But why would Larry need divorce papers?
The attorney measures her words.
Larry’s Attorney
I’m not here to account for Larry’s personal decisions. My only task was to deliver the documents.
Bethany shakes her head slowly, adrift.
Bethany
He never said a word to me about this.
A memory begins to surface
The attorney offers nothing. Bethany’s gaze falls back to the pages in her hands. Her thoughts spiral — every odd conversation, every unexplained argument, every moment Larry had seemed a thousand miles away, even standing in the same room.
Scene: The Front Hall — Moments Later
Larry comes home
The front door swings open. Bethany’s head snaps toward the hallway. The attorney turns as well. Footsteps sound against the floorboards — Larry, back from work, arms full of his things, utterly unaware of the storm waiting inside.
Larry
Bethany? I’m home.
Silence answers him. He takes another step inside — and stops cold. Someone is sitting in his living room. His attorney. His eyes go wide, shock and confusion crossing his face in the same instant.
Larry
What are you doing here?
The attorney rises slowly. Bethany stays seated, the papers still clutched in her hands. Larry’s eyes land on them. His expression collapses. He looks at Bethany. At his attorney. Back at the papers.
Larry
Bethany…
Bethany rises too. Her voice is low, but there’s steel in it.
Bethany
Larry…
She lifts the papers toward him.
Bethany
What is this?
Act Two — The Reckoning
Scene: The Living Room — Continuous
The truth begins to surface
Larry says nothing. The quiet stretches until it’s almost painful. Bethany closes the distance between them by a single step.
Bethany
Your attorney came here this morning.
Larry glances at the attorney.
Bethany
She brought these for you.
He swallows hard.
Bethany
But she gave them to me instead.
Larry looks down at the floor. The attorney watches them both without a word.
Larry
Bethany, listen—
Bethany
No. You listen.
He falls quiet. Her eyes don’t leave him.
Bethany
You never said one word to me about a divorce.
Larry
I was going to explain.
Bethany
When?
Larry has no answer
He opens his mouth, but nothing comes. The attorney steps in gently.
Larry’s Attorney
Larry — perhaps this should happen calmly.
Larry
I know.
Bethany’s gaze shifts between them, her confusion curdling into suspicion.
Bethany
So you both knew about this?
The attorney says nothing. Larry turns back to Bethany.
Larry
It’s not as simple as you think.
Bethany looks down at the papers, then back up at him, unmoved.
Bethany
Then make it simple.
Scene: The Threshold
No way out but forward
Larry stands frozen by the door. His attorney watches him with quiet gravity. Bethany waits, unwavering. For the first time, he understands there’s no escaping this conversation. Slowly, he reaches back and shuts the front door. The lock clicks into place, and the sound seems to fill the whole house.
Bethany holds the papers against her chest. Larry steps forward, cautious, like the ground might give way.
Larry
Bethany… there’s a lot you don’t know.
Her eyes narrow.
Bethany
Then start talking.
Larry glances once more at his attorney, who returns a steady, serious look. He turns back to Bethany. The room goes silent again, the papers still lying between them like a line neither has crossed yet. Whatever Larry has been hiding — Bethany is finally ready to hear it.
