THE ULTIMATUM
Larry wanted to help Shara's mother. But one shocking demand turned a family crisis into a confrontation nobody saw coming.
The house is unusually quiet.
Shara sits alone with her phone in her hand, staring at Bethany's name.
She has already called once.
Bethany didn't want to get involved.
But Shara believes she has run out of options.
She calls again.
SharaBethany, please. I wouldn't keep calling you if I had another choice.
BethanyShara, I already told you. I can't do this.
SharaMy mother is sick. She needs help.
BethanyI'm sorry, but this isn't something I can fix.
Silence.
Shara closes her eyes.
She doesn't argue.
Instead, she says something that makes Bethany pause.
SharaFine. If you won't help her... I'll find someone who will.
The call ends.
Shara immediately scrolls through her contacts.
She stops at one name.
Larry.
She presses call.
LarryShara? What's going on?
SharaBethany refused to help my mom.
LarryHelp her with what?
SharaShe needs help with her situation. She's sick, Larry. I'm scared something is going to happen to her.
Larry sits up.
LarryWhat do you want me to do?
SharaTalk to Neuberger. Please. Maybe he'll listen to you.
Larry hesitates.
He already knows Neuberger isn't easy to convince.
LarryAll right. I'll talk to him.
Later that night, Larry arrives at Neuberger's house.
He knocks once.
Nothing.
He knocks again.
Finally, the door opens.
NeubergerLarry? What are you doing here this late?
LarryI need to talk to you about Shara.
Neuberger's expression changes.
He steps aside.
NeubergerCome in.
Neither man realizes that this conversation is about to change everything.
Larry explains Shara's situation.
He tells Neuberger that Shara's mother is dealing with serious problems and that Shara desperately wants her to receive proper help.
LarryShara believes you might be able to help.
Neuberger doesn't answer immediately.
He walks toward the kitchen, pours himself a glass of water, and slowly turns around.
NeubergerNo.
LarryThat's it? Just no?
NeubergerThere are consequences for what people do.
Larry realizes Neuberger has no intention of changing his mind.
She's sick. Shara is scared. Can't you at least listen?
NeubergerI listened. My answer is still no.
LarryPeople deserve a chance to get help.
NeubergerAnd you came here expecting me to solve a problem that isn't mine?
Larry's frustration begins to rise.
He takes a breath and tries one last time.
LarryI'm not asking you to erase the past. I'm asking you to help Shara.
NeubergerThen tell Shara I'm sorry.
Larry stares at him.
That's when Larry makes a decision he will immediately regret.
Then Larry crossed the line...
One sentence changed the entire conversation.
If you refuse to help Shara's mother, I'm going to reconsider my marriage to Bethany.
Neuberger freezes.
For several seconds, the room is completely silent.
NeubergerDid you just threaten my family over this?
LarryI'm telling you how serious this is.
NeubergerNo. You're putting your marriage on the line because you can't accept my answer.
Larry's jaw tightens.
NeubergerYou're angry. Go home.
The confrontation explodes
What happened next left Larry wishing he could take the last few seconds back.
Get out of my house, Larry.
LarryJust help her.
NeubergerI'm done talking.
Larry's anger boils over.
In a sudden moment of rage, Larry strikes Neuberger.
Everything goes silent.
Larry immediately steps back.
The anger disappears from his face.
LarryI shouldn't have done that.
Neuberger slowly looks at him.
He doesn't yell.
Somehow, that makes the moment even more frightening.
NeubergerYou have no idea what you just started.
Neuberger reaches for his phone.
LarryWho are you calling?
Neuberger doesn't answer.
Larry backs toward the door.
Before leaving, he looks back one last time.
Neuberger is standing completely still, phone pressed against his ear.
Larry walks out.
But he doesn't know who Neuberger just called.
Larry gets into his car.
His hands are still shaking.
Then his phone vibrates.
UNKNOWN NUMBER.
Larry opens the message.
Larry stares at the screen.
Before he can respond, another message appears.
Larry's expression changes.
He immediately calls the number.
No answer.
He calls again.
Still nothing.
Then the phone rang...
This time, the caller wasn't hiding behind a text message.
Larry answered.
A frightened woman's voice whispered:
“Larry... don't trust Neuberger.”
Who is this?
The line suddenly goes dead.
Larry sits completely still.
Then his phone buzzes again.
A photograph appears.
It shows Shara's mother.
Larry looks closely.
The photo appears to have been taken recently.
But there is something in the background that makes his stomach drop.
It isn't a jail.
It isn't a hospital.
It's somewhere Larry has been before.
But who took the photograph?
Why was Shara's mother at that location?
Who sent Larry the warning?
And what exactly did Neuberger do after Larry walked out?
The answers could expose a secret nobody in the family was prepared to face.
