THE ARGUMENT THAT WOULDN’T END

The house had been tense all morning.

Larry and Bethany had been going back and forth over the smallest things. Every conversation seemed to turn into another argument, and Brooke had reached the point where she couldn't take listening to it anymore.

Brooke stood nearby, watching her father try to keep his composure while Bethany continued pressing him for answers.

Bethany: “Why are you taking so long to answer? I asked you a simple question.”

Larry: “I was happier when the house was peaceful. That doesn't mean I was happier without you.”

Bethany: “So I'm the reason the house isn't peaceful?”

Larry: “I didn't say that either.”

Brooke could see the argument getting worse, so she walked away.

Later that afternoon, Larry remembered that he needed Brooke's car keys.

He didn't want to wake her because she had finally gone upstairs to rest after the stressful morning.

Larry quietly opened Brooke's bedroom door and stepped inside.

He looked around and spotted the keys near her nightstand.

He reached for them.

Brooke: “Dad?! What are you doing in my room?”

Larry: “I came to get your keys.”

Brooke: “You couldn't ask me?”

Brooke: “You sneaking into my room for keys after everything that happened this morning? That's weird, Dad.”

Larry: “I'm not sneaking around. I just needed the keys.”

Just as Larry was about to leave, Bethany appeared at the bedroom door.

She immediately noticed Larry holding Brooke's keys.

Bethany: “What's going on?”

Brooke: “Dad came in here while I was sleeping to take my keys.”

Bethany: “You couldn't even ask her?”

Larry: “Here we go again.”

Bethany: “No, Larry. I'm asking a normal question.”

Brooke suddenly realized what was happening.

Brooke: “This is exactly what I was talking about earlier.”

Both Larry and Bethany looked at her.

Brooke: “Everything turns into an argument. Dad can't say anything without somebody taking it personally.”

BROOKE DROPS THE TRUTH THAT SILENCES BOTH OF THEM

Bethany looked at Brooke, waiting for her to explain herself.

Bethany: “So what exactly do you want me to do?”

Brooke looked at both of them.

Brooke: “Stop asking Dad to prove that he loves you every time you two disagree.”

Larry's eyes widened.

Bethany didn't respond.

Brooke continued.

Brooke: “And Dad, you can't just disappear into my room and take my stuff without asking either. Both of you need to stop making everything bigger than it has to be.”

For the first time that day, neither Larry nor Bethany had a comeback.

Larry slowly handed Brooke the keys.

Larry: “Fair enough. I should've asked.”

Bethany looked at Larry, then at Brooke.

But before she walked away, she asked one final question.

Bethany: “Larry... after everything Brooke just said, do you really think we can fix this?”

Larry stared at her.

This time, he didn't answer immediately.
