Bethany Gives Larry a Taste of His Own Medicine… The Silent Treatment at Breakfast
The morning started off calm, with the smell of breakfast filling the air. Larry tried to ease into conversation as Bethany quietly sat down, her expression unreadable.
“Hey,” he greeted, trying to keep it light. “I’ll hit you later, though. Peace.”
Bethany just nodded and focused on her food, letting Larry fumble a bit before asking, “You just started without me, huh?”
Larry took a bite and tried to break the tension. “That looks good… your food okay?”
Bethany didn’t respond. The silent treatment was in full effect, and Larry quickly realized he was on the receiving end of the same behavior he’d seen before.
“What’s… what are you upset about?” he finally asked.
Bethany didn’t speak. Larry sighed. “Oh, I get it. So now you’re giving me the silent treatment because I asked you not to go to Miami for Destiny’s birthday?”
“I mean, if you want to be sad about it, that’s okay,” he added.
“I’m just doing what’s right for her. I want her birthday to be perfect, so I thought avoiding confusion and drama was best.”
Still, Bethany remained quiet, giving Larry plenty of time to reflect on how his actions sometimes overshadowed the bigger picture.
Larry continued, almost to himself, “You know, I don’t need to be overseen down in Florida.
I know what I’m doing. Seems like you’re more worried about me and Shara than about anything else… like you don’t trust me.”
Bethany’s silence spoke louder than words.
“And for me, right now, Destiny’s well-being is more important than any bickering between us,” Larry said, finally softening. “I promise her a great birthday, whether we like it or not. And maybe after the birthday… we can… oh hey… can you teach me how to say ‘Happy Birthday’ in German? I want to tell her myself.”
Bethany finally cracked a small smile, signaling that sometimes actions—and silence—can be louder than words.
