SCENE 1: THE ANNOUNCEMENT THAT DESTROYED BETHANY'S PLANS

INT. LARRY AND BETHANY'S HOUSE — DAY. Bethany had hoped the upcoming trip would give her and Larry a chance to reconnect. Their counselor had encouraged them to spend quality time together, away from everyday distractions.

LARRY

Bethany, I need to tell you something about the trip. Brooke is coming with us, and Purnell is coming too.

Bethany stared at him, waiting for him to admit that he was joking.

BETHANY

Wait. Brooke and Purnell are coming on our marriage trip? Larry, please tell me you're not serious.

LARRY

What's the problem? They're coming along, and everybody can enjoy themselves.

BETHANY

The problem is that this trip was supposed to be about us! Our counselor recommended that we spend time together because our marriage is falling apart. How are we supposed to work on our relationship with other people following us around?

LARRY

You're turning a simple trip into a huge problem. I don't understand why everything has to become an argument.

BETHANY

Because you keep making decisions without considering me! You asked me to keep trying, and I agreed. Now you're changing the whole purpose of the trip without even discussing it with me.

LARRY

I've already made the arrangements. Brooke and Purnell are coming. That's it.

BETHANY

You don't get to decide everything just because you've made the arrangements! I'm your wife, Larry. My feelings should matter to you.

Larry turned away, unwilling to continue the conversation. Before Bethany could say anything else, someone knocked at the door.

SCENE 2: PURNELL ARRIVES AT THE WORST POSSIBLE MOMENT

Purnell walked inside, ready to leave. He immediately noticed the tension between his brother and Bethany.

PURNELL

What's going on in here? I could feel the tension before I even got through the door.

LARRY

Nothing, bro. We're just having a conversation. You ready to go?

PURNELL

I've been ready. I thought we were going on a trip, not attending a family meeting.

Bethany looked at him, stunned by how casually he was treating the situation.

BETHANY

Purnell, do you even know why Larry planned this trip?

PURNELL

He told me we were going away. If there's something else going on, you need to discuss it with him.

BETHANY

That's exactly what I've been trying to do! This trip was supposed to help us save our marriage. But now everyone else has been invited, and Larry doesn't seem to care how I feel.

PURNELL

Listen, I didn't force Larry to invite me. He asked me to come, so I accepted. Don't put all of this on me.

BETHANY

You were happy enough to accept without asking whether this was actually appropriate.

LARRY

Bethany, stop taking your frustration out on my brother!

BETHANY

Your brother, your brother, your brother! That's all I hear. When do I get to be the person you defend? When do I get to feel like your wife instead of an inconvenience?

LARRY

Watch how you're speaking to me.

BETHANY

I'm speaking to you as the woman who has been begging you to listen!

Bethany's frustration had reached its limit. She turned toward Purnell, determined to tell him exactly what she thought.

SCENE 3: BETHANY SAYS WHAT EVERYONE FEARED

Bethany stepped toward Purnell and grabbed his collar in a moment of anger. Purnell immediately tried to pull away.

BETHANY

Aren't you ashamed of yourself? You keep involving yourself in our problems when you should be concentrating on your own life!

PURNELL

Get your hands off me, Bethany! You don't have the right to grab me!

BETHANY

You're right. I shouldn't have grabbed you. But you need to understand that your presence is making an already difficult situation worse!

PURNELL

You don't know anything about my life, so don't stand there acting like you know what I should be doing!

BETHANY

Then stop acting like you know what's best for my marriage! Larry and I need to work on our relationship. We don't need you in the middle of it!

Purnell straightened his shirt, his expression hardening.

PURNELL

You could have said that without putting your hands on me.

BETHANY

You're right about that. But don't confuse my apology for grabbing you with an apology for speaking up. I have every right to tell Larry what I need from my husband.

LARRY

That's enough! You're not going to stand here and attack my brother!

BETHANY

I'm not asking you to abandon your brother! I'm asking you to remember that you made vows to me too. Why does everybody else's opinion matter more than my feelings?

For a moment, the room went quiet. Bethany hoped Larry would finally understand. Instead, he moved closer to Purnell, making it clear whose side he intended to take.

SCENE 4: THE ARGUMENT BECOMES A NIGHTMARE

Larry's anger grew as he watched Purnell struggle to contain his frustration. Neither man was willing to step back and allow the argument to end.

LARRY

Bro, don't let her get to you. She thinks she can say anything she wants and everybody has to accept it.

PURNELL

I came here to go on a trip with my brother. I didn't come here to be disrespected in somebody else's argument.

BETHANY

Then let's stop arguing! I shouldn't have grabbed you, Purnell. I'm sorry for that. But Larry, please listen to me. We can still talk about this.

The tension escalated. Larry and Purnell picked up hockey sticks that were nearby, and Bethany immediately backed away in fear.

BETHANY

Larry, put that down! Please! This isn't what I wanted!

LARRY

You had plenty to say about my family a minute ago. Now you want everybody to calm down?

BETHANY

I want this argument to end! I made a mistake when I grabbed Purnell, and I've admitted it. That doesn't mean you have the right to hurt me!

PURNELL

You should have thought about the consequences before you started this.

BETHANY

I'm your family too, Larry! I'm your wife! Please remember that before you do something you can't take back.

Larry hesitated, but his anger took control. The confrontation turned violent, and both men attacked Bethany with the hockey sticks. She cried out and tried to protect herself as the situation spiraled out of control.

BETHANY

Please stop! Larry, please! I don't want to fight you. I just want this to end!

Eventually, the attack stopped. Bethany was left seriously injured, while the room fell into a frightening silence. The trip that was supposed to help repair a marriage had become a nightmare.

SCENE 5: BETHANY'S WORDS LEAVE LARRY SPEECHLESS

Bethany struggled to move and looked at Larry through her tears. The shock of what had happened was written across her face.

BETHANY

How could you do this to me? I'm your wife, Larry. I never thought you would be the person I needed protection from.

LARRY

You shouldn't have brought my brother into this.

BETHANY

I shouldn't have grabbed him. I've admitted that. But nothing I said justifies what happened here!

LARRY

I was defending my family.

BETHANY

And who was defending me? I came to you because I wanted to save our marriage. I wanted us to have one chance to fix things. Instead, you made me afraid of my own husband.

Purnell looked away. The anger that had driven the confrontation was beginning to give way to the seriousness of what had happened.

BETHANY

You can cancel the trip, Larry. You can defend your brother. You can blame me for every argument we've ever had. But you cannot pretend that this hasn't changed everything.

Larry said nothing. For the first time, the consequences of his actions were impossible to ignore.

SCENE 6: AN URGENT RUSH TO THE HOSPITAL

Later, Bethany received urgent medical care at the hospital. The medical team assessed her injuries and began treatment while she tried to process the frightening events that had brought her there.

NURSE

Bethany, you're in a safe place now. We're going to take care of you. Please tell us if you feel any new pain or discomfort.

BETHANY

I keep thinking about what happened. He was supposed to be the person I could trust most in the world.

NURSE

You deserve to be safe and treated with respect. Right now, we're concentrating on your health and making sure you receive the care you need.

Bethany turned toward the window. She remembered the excitement she had once felt at the thought of repairing her marriage. Now she wondered whether the relationship could ever be the same.

BETHANY

I wasn't asking for anything extraordinary. I just wanted my husband to listen to me. How did everything become so terrible?

The nurse stayed nearby while the medical team continued its work. Bethany knew that recovering physically would be only one part of what lay ahead.

SCENE 7: LARRY BEGINS TO QUESTION EVERYTHING

Back at home, Larry sat in silence. The packed bags remained beside the door, a reminder of the trip that would never happen as planned.

PURNELL

So what happens now? Everything got out of hand.

LARRY

Bethany is in the hospital, Purnell. That's what happens now.

PURNELL

She shouldn't have grabbed me or said those things about my life.

LARRY

I know she was wrong to grab you. But that doesn't excuse what we did.

Purnell looked at his brother, surprised by the change in his voice.

PURNELL

You're saying this is our fault?

LARRY

I'm saying I had a choice, and I made the wrong one. She was begging me to stop. I should have put the stick down and walked away.

PURNELL

You know I've always had your back.

LARRY

I know, bro. But having my back doesn't mean I should have let this happen. I was so busy defending you that I stopped thinking about what was right.

Larry's phone suddenly rang. The hospital's number appeared on the screen. He answered immediately, his heart pounding.

LARRY

Hello? This is Larry. Is Bethany okay?

A medical professional spoke on the other end. Larry listened carefully. Within seconds, the color drained from his face.

LARRY

Wait. What do you mean? Can you explain that again?

Purnell stood up, alarmed by his brother's reaction.

PURNELL

Larry, what's wrong? What did they say?

Larry raised one hand, asking him to wait while he listened to the rest of the message. His eyes filled with fear.

LARRY

I'm coming to the hospital right now. Please, just make sure she's okay.

He ended the call and stared at his phone. Purnell moved closer, desperate for an explanation.

PURNELL

What happened, Larry? Is Bethany getting worse?

LARRY

The hospital needs us there immediately. They have something important to tell us about Bethany.

PURNELL

Then let's go. We can't sit here waiting.

Larry grabbed his keys. As the two brothers hurried toward the door, he could not shake the feeling that the next few minutes might change their lives forever.

SCENE 8: THE HOSPITAL REVEALS A NEW TWIST

At the hospital, Larry rushed toward the reception desk while Purnell followed behind him. A staff member directed them to wait for the doctor. Neither man could hide his anxiety.

LARRY

Please, I received a call about my wife. I'm Larry. I need to know what's happening with Bethany.

NURSE

The doctor will speak with you shortly. Please wait here.

The minutes dragged on. Larry paced the corridor while Purnell sat with his head lowered. Neither knew what to say.

Finally, the doctor appeared. He looked at Larry and asked him to step forward. Larry's heart began racing.

DOCTOR

Larry, we've been assessing Bethany's condition. There is something important we need to discuss with you.

LARRY

Please tell me she's going to be okay.

The doctor paused before answering. Larry glanced at Purnell, then looked back at the doctor, waiting for the words that might change everything.

DOCTOR

Before we go any further, there's something Bethany has asked us to tell you. She has also made a decision about what happens next.

LARRY

What decision? What did she say?

The doctor looked at Larry carefully.

DOCTOR

Bethany is receiving medical care. When she's ready, she'll speak to you herself. For now, you need to understand that she deserves to feel safe.

Larry's face fell. He finally understood that an apology would not automatically repair the damage he had caused.

PURNELL

Larry, what are we going to do now?

LARRY

I don't know. But I know I can't keep pretending that what happened was just another argument.

Behind the hospital doors, Bethany was preparing to make a decision that could change her relationship with Larry forever. Would she agree to speak to him? Would she walk away from the marriage? And would Larry finally accept responsibility for what he had done?

The answers were still waiting behind the closed door.
